On Tuesday, 28 February at the Sala Buzzati of the Corriere della Sera, Studiolabo, the agency and creative studio in charge of the events, unveiled all the details of the next edition of Fuorisalone and the Brera Design District, which will be held as usual in conjunction with the Salone del Mobile.Milano, giving rise to what is known as the Milan Design Week.
"Fuorisalone is not only a reference point for a sector of excellence that represents the quality of Made in Italy in the world, but also a great opportunity for Milan. Installations, exhibitions, and events spread throughout the city will rekindle the streets, districts, and neighbourhoods of the city, confirming its role as the capital of design and enhancing its image on an international level. I am certain that this edition of Fuorisalone will also be a not-to-be-missed event," said Alessia Cappello, Councillor for Labour and Economic Development with responsibility for Fashion and Design of the Municipality of Milan.
"Laboratorio Futuro": theme of Fuorisalone 2023
"Laboratorio Futuro" (Future Lab) is the theme of the 2023 edition of Fuorisalone, a reflection on how we imagine our future, in relation to the difficult times we live in. Laboratory as a place for discussion, laboratory as a shared working method, laboratory as a way to build solutions for a better future in the present.
This theme recalls the experimental dimension of the project and is meant to be an invitation to question ourselves on how we want to plan change by responding to the many challenges that await us. This is why the 2023 edition will focus on the themes of sustainable design, the circular economy, innovation in materials, urban regeneration and artificial intelligence. All with an eye on the new generations, which will see the involvement of students from the main schools in the sector.
“Fuorisalone – said Paolo Casati, Co-founder and Creative Director of Studiolabo - represents an opportunity for networking and sharing, a collective laboratory of experiences. This is the inspiration for this year's theme: a laboratory is an active space where knowledge is shared. It is essential to combine skills to lay the foundations for a better future".
Fuorisalone 2023: projects and appointments
The calendar of projects and events planned for Fuorisalone 2023 is extremely rich. Among this year's novelties is 'The Oracle of the Fuorisalone', a project conceived by Studiolabo, which consists of a deck of 28 cards illustrated by Serena Mazzi, produced in a limited edition by the historic Tiburtini typography, with the aim of triggering an action or an idea.
The spaces of the Civic Aquarium of Milan will host "Trame", the interactive installation curated by STARK, a leading company in the production of multimedia installations, which will interpret the "Future Lab" theme.
The Fuorisalone Award is back, a recognition that rewards the most interesting contents and installations presented at Milan Design Week. The novelty of this edition of the Fuorisalone Award is the special mention by the Salone del Mobile in continuity with Euroluce. Cristian Confalonieri, Co-founder of Studiolabo, declared: “Once again this year the Fuorisalone Award confirms its mission of identifying the most relevant projects for the world of design. Furthermore, the new Special Mention by the Salone Del Mobile demonstrates the will to create a system and enhance the city of Milan, a reference point for the furniture and design sector".
The usual appointment with the e.Reporter is back again this year, a project born in 2003 dedicated to students of design, architecture, visual arts with a particular passion for photography and audio-visual content, who will be able to contribute to the collective story of the Fuorisalone.
All the news, contents, inspirations and trends of the Design Week in a single digital space: also for this edition, Inspire is the digital tool for those who want to embark on a journey to discover design.
Design Districts 2023
There will be five Design Districts for 2023: Brera Design District, Tortona District, Milano Durini Design, 5VIE and Isola Design District.
Brera Design District, the beating heart of the event, offers a calendar with over 240 events including exhibitions, installations, group shows, product innovations.
The Tortona District is back with a communication proposal aimed at bringing together and telling the different realities that animate it: Tortona Rocks, BASE, Superstudio and Tortona Design Week. The district becomes the spokesperson for current issues seen through the lens of planning, with the aim of responding to the challenges of tomorrow.
Milano Durini Design, with over 40 design companies, for the 2023 edition proposes the common thread "Urban Metamorphosis", among installations with a strong evocative character.
5VIE returns with a proposal dedicated to designer design and the contamination of design with art and high craftsmanship. This year's theme, "Design for Good", is an invitation to look at design as a tool for creating and cultivating deep human connections, with a view to sustainability rooted in mutual care.
Isola Design District foresees the seventh edition of Isola Design Festival: over 25 locations host group exhibitions and events involving hundreds of international designers, design studios and craftsmen. Six group exhibitions are scheduled that focus on themes such as circular and regenerative furnishings, collectible design and new craftsmanship, tech design and well-being.
Brera Design Week 2023: “The future is now”
As always, the program of events scheduled during the Fuorisalone 2023 in the Brera Design District is very rich, the district that boasts the highest concentration of design showrooms in the world with 183 permanent exhibition spaces, to which 7 new openings will be added this year during the Milan Design week.
The theme of the 14th edition is "The future is now", "The future is now, giving it shape and meaning is a priority". By promoting the theme proposed by Fuorisalone, "Future Lab", Brera Design Week 2023 "activates a reflection on the challenges of the contemporary, giving space to projects and practices capable of triggering actions of change. The future is not something abstract and immaterial, but is built with the quality of our present” as stated by Paolo Casati.
Brera Design Week 2023 will be a lens on the current issues that most interest the design industry, from the innovation of materials to circularity, passing through the new market challenges between online and offline experience, with an eye for new ways to involve and gather the interest of the new generations.
GloTM will be among the protagonists of the Brera Design District with its artistic project gloTM for art together with Agostino Iacurci, an artist recognized for his works characterized by synthetic shapes and bright colours: together they will present “Dry Days, Tropical Nights”, a large installation in Largo Treves which invites the viewer to look at how our planet could become and to build a better tomorrow all together.
