Sustainability: a very positive trend for the furniture sector
The FSC Furniture Awards 2021, the first edition with a European dimension, highlighted the very positive trend of sustainability in the "furniture" sector: as of November 2021, a quarter of the over 20,000 companies in the European supply chains with FSC certification belong to the indoor and outdoor wood furniture sector.
The FSC International database, updated to November 2021, shows that the countries with the highest number of certifications are Poland (861), United Kingdom (746) and Italy (602).
These numbers are confirmed by the growing demand for sustainably sourced products: according to research conducted by Globescan on behalf of FSC International, 84% of consumers expect companies to ensure their wood/paper products do not contribute to deforestation.
Jeremy Harrison, Chief Markets Officer at FSC International, said, "FSC has continued to work closely with furniture manufacturers, brands and retailers to help them along the supply chain, raising awareness about responsible forest management and its benefits, and communicating their commitment to FSC certification."
In turn, Alexia Schrott, marketing manager for FSC Italy and coordinator of the awards, emphasized that in the era of climate change, viable solutions and positive examples of how forest conservation, communities and markets can coexist must be provided. "The FSC Furniture Awards promotes best practices by rewarding the achievements of companies that have decided to share their journey towards sustainability with FSC," she said.
