The new drying and emission abatement plant
This new plant consists of a direct dryer and a double-stage electrofilter equipped with a continuous emission monitoring system and depluming technology for the recovery of water from flue gas condensation. Saib is the only company in the sector in Italy to have a dedicated abatement system exclusively for the dryer. The new filtering system allows a 20% reduction in polluting mass flows emitted into the atmosphere while increasing production capacity.
Thanks to this new intervention, the company will be able to recover and transform into particleboard panels more than 600,000 tons of wood at the end of its life coming from woodworking and furniture production activities, from construction and demolition waste and from separate waste collection.
Saib: committed to sustainable management for 60 years
The inauguration was attended, in addition to the press, by the authorities of the Emilia-Romagna Region, including the President of the Emilia-Romagna Region, Stefano Bonaccini, who, in his speech, underlined the importance of a company like Saib, an example of a company that creates work while respecting the environment and people. "Thanks to companies that export their quality like Saib, - added Bonaccini - our Region is at the top of the export rankings. The first half of this year has already recorded a 6.6% increase in exports compared to 2019, which had been a record year."
Roberta Battaglia, mayor of Caorso, highlighted the company's contribution in economic and social terms to the territory, its respect for workers and the inclusion of women in production. Sergio Doriguzzi, CEO of Saib, explained how this intervention has represented a significant design and economic effort to confirm the commitment to sustainable management of the company for 60 years.
Sustainability Report 2020
On this occasion Saib presented its first sustainability report, whose contents have been elaborated on the basis of the main indicators of environmental, social and economic sustainability.
CEO Clara Conti commented: "We have decided to tell our story because we want to share with you the many efforts we make every day to make our small contribution to a better world. In this first environmental and social sustainability report, we tell you how we work, the paths we have taken, the goals we have achieved and our next objectives.
The impact of the circular business model, developed in over twenty-five years by Saib, which has transformed the business from linear to circular, has been analyzed. The company has implemented over the years the ability to replace virgin wood with post-consumer waste wood: a noble material is thus recovered and regenerated, acquiring new life.
As far as the environmental impact is concerned, the results obtained show a largely favorable balance and demonstrate how the Saib process, based on the recovery and enhancement of wood, allows to prevent the emission of 45,000 tons of CO2 per year into the atmosphere compared to companies that use virgin wood. Recycling wood waste as a raw material in the panel industry allows a 65% reduction in CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
"These results are the result of a long and difficult path - concluded Clara Conti. - It was an extremely complex technological challenge. We were pioneers and our path has also been characterized by mistakes and attempts to achieve excellence. The commitment of industry and politics is to show that sustainability is a serious path and should not be trivialized".
